NELSPRUIT – Two suspects aged 29 and 45 are due to appear in the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court today, Friday 23 June 2023, on charges of trafficking dagga using a courier van as well as a SUV car.
Their appearance comes after they were arrested today, 22 June 2023, at around 09:30, by SAPS members from Piet Retief. The Police reportedly stopped a courier van with North West registration number plates and then recovered the dagga. Thereafter another vehicle, a Mazda SUV was also stopped by the members. A search was then conducted whereby dagga was found inside as well.
During preliminary investigations, it was discovered that both drivers of the two cars were possibly on the same mission.
Through further investigations, it was also revealed that they were possibly traveling to the North West Province.
The two suspects were arrested and charged with dealing in dagga. The total confiscated dagga weighs about 186 kilograms with an estimated street value of about R 358 000. Both vehicles were confiscated for further investigation as the police believe that the cars were used in the commission of crime.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has welcomed the arrest of the two suspects. “Members in the province are so vigilant and we are so elated by the manner in which they are so motivated. Perpetrators can never be allowed to use the roads for trafficking of dagga or any other illegal items” said the General.
