TWO BOGUS ESKOM EMPLOYEES APPEARED IN COURT

MPUMALANGA –Ben Elphas Mbongani (42) and Petrus Mandla Maseko (43) appeared before the Kwaggafontein Magistrate Court on Friday 07 May 2021 after they were arrested by members of the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation in Mpumalanga conducted a joint search and seizure operation with Eskom investigators on Thursday, 06 May 2021, at Kwaggafontein.Â
Intelligence was received by the investigating officers regarding people suspected to be impersonating Eskom employees and installing illegal electricity connections for locals.
The team proceeded to the address received and during the search two males aged 42 and 43 were identified. Pre-paid meter boxes, cables, split meter boards, cards, and reflector jackets as well personal protective equipment and various other tools belonging to Eskom were seized for further investigation. A Nissan MP200 Bakkie was also seized as it is suspected to be proceeds of crime.Â
The duo was arrested and charged with tampering with essential infrastructure, theft of Eskom property as well as possession thereof. They were also additionally charged for the illegal installation of Eskom electricity.
Accused were granted R10 000.00 bail each and the case is postponed to 25 May 2021 for further investigation.Â
