Fraudster sentenced
The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Zodwa Mokoena welcomed the sentencing of 46 years old, Christopher Duncan Mabasa who was found guilty and sentenced by the Middelburg Commercial Crime Court on Wednesday, 17 August 2022 for fraud.
The sentencing followed the investigation undertook by the Hawks Middelburg based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation which happened on the 03 May 2021 at Viva Filling station in Carolina. It is alleged that on the day in question, the accused used counterfeit fleet cards to purchase diesel at Viva Filling station in Carolina and to pay at the Middelburg Toll plaza. The matter was reported to the Hawks and the case was finalised hence the sentence.
On 17 August 2022, the accused pleaded guilty on three counts of fraud and he was sentenced to ten years imprisonment of which five years is suspended for five years on condition that the accused is not convicted of fraud during the period of suspension
Major General Mokoena applauded the investigator and Judiciary for ensuring the conclusion of the case followed by the sentence which will serve as an example to others who are still committing such kind of crime. She concluded by saying that “As the Hawks we shall continue investigating and arresting law breakers without fear, favor nor prejudice.
