DA welcomes SAHRC probe into 59 Mpumalanga schools left to use pit toilets
The DA has for several years been fighting with the Mpumalanga Department of Education to provide a conducive learning environment for our learners.
The SAHRC has requested the MEC in Mpumalanga, Mr. Bonakele Majuba, to provide it with a detailed action plan with strict timeframes and tangible measures to overcome the health and physical risks to which learners, educators, and administrators are exposed.
This comes after the Commission received reports from the provincial education department in a response. Majuba stated to the portfolio committee that no upgrades or any additions to schools on sanitation and water will be done in the 2020/2021 financial year as the department does not have the R473 000 000 to implement these projects.
27 years into democracy, no learner should be still using pit latrines in Mpumalanga and across South Africa.
The DA welcomes this full investigation and hopes that the SAHRC findings finally bring the much-needed dignity back to the learners of Mpumalanga.
