DA appalled by ANC’s vote against motion to stop vehicle misuse in Thembisile Hani Municipality
ANC councilors in Thembisile Hani Local Municipality have once again highlighted their party’s affinity for corruption after they voted against a DA motion that sought to bring an end to municipal vehicle misuse in the municipality. After several complaints by residents which were brought to the attention of the DA regarding the misuse of municipal vehicles, the DA investigated and witnessed a municipal bakkie being used to go visit the driver’s girlfriend late at night.
The DA then reported the matter to the Municipal Manager, Oscar Nkosi, who in a message requested a picture of the driver even though a picture of the vehicle’s number plate was sent to him. His response was rather unsatisfactory as the DA believes that there should be measures in place to track down municipal vehicles when they are signed out to officials.
Furthermore, the roads in the municipality are very bad, yet trucks are used by some drivers to deliver foundation filling to private homes for a small fee.
Some of these municipal workers are the very same workers who are supposed to be fixing water leaks within the municipality. However, they continue to drive municipal vehicles for their own benefit and the expense is carried by taxpayers.
With the abovementioned motion, the DA aimed for:
• All the municipality vehicles to be clearly branded
• Toll-free corruption number to reflect on all municipal vehicles
• The municipality to run a media campaign on how corruption can be reported
The response of the Speaker, Mr. Thomas Mabena, to the DA’s motion is worrisome as he was the first to say that there is no corruption and that the municipality’s vehicles are used correctly. The DA clearly submitted evidence to the contrary! The abuse of power by the ANC-led government must come to an end. We will continue to monitor that all municipal vehicles are used to serve the people of Thembisile Hani.
